Why convert AZW3 to EPUB?
AZW3, also called KF8, is the Kindle format that replaced MOBI and supports much richer formatting. Outside Amazon’s own apps and devices, though, very few readers can open it, while EPUB opens almost everywhere.
Typical DRM-free AZW3 files include books you converted yourself in Calibre, titles from publishers and indie authors who sell without DRM, and backups of your own documents.
AZW3 and EPUB are both built from HTML and CSS inside, so the content moves across cleanly. Chapters, bold and italic text, images and the table of contents carry over, set in a clean, standard ebook layout.

Tips for the best result
- Books downloaded from the Kindle Store are usually DRM-protected and will not convert.
- Files downloaded by the newer Kindle desktop apps are often in KFX format, not AZW3. Check the file extension before converting.
- Plain “.azw” files are an older, usually DRM-protected Kindle format, and are not the same as AZW3.
- If the table of contents is empty after converting, convert again with “Rebuild from headings”.
Where to read your converted books
EPUB opens on far more devices than AZW3. These are the best places to read it.
Kobo e-readers
Your converted AZW3 books open on any Kobo straight away. Drag them onto the device over USB.
