Why convert PDF to EPUB?
A PDF locks every word to a fixed page. That is perfect for printing, but on a 6-inch e-reader or a phone, a letter-size page shrinks to tiny text, and you end up pinching and panning line by line. EPUB lets the text reflow: the reading app wraps lines to fit the screen, and you choose the font, size and spacing.
Converting makes the most sense for text-heavy documents: novels, reports, manuals, course notes and long articles you want to read on the go. It also lets you send a document to a Kindle through Send to Kindle, which accepts EPUB files.
Results depend on how the PDF was made. PDFs exported from Word, Google Docs or a publishing tool contain real text and convert well. Scanned PDFs are only pictures of pages, so they need text recognition (OCR) first. Layout-heavy PDFs such as magazines, comics and textbooks with sidebars rarely reflow cleanly, and are usually better left as PDF.
PDF vs EPUB
| Feature | EPUB | |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Fixed: pages look identical everywhere | Reflowable: text fits the screen |
| Reading on a phone | Zoom and scroll sideways | Text wraps to the screen width |
| Font and size | Set by the author | Chosen by the reader |
| Best for | Printing, forms, design-heavy pages | Books and long-form reading |
| Works on Kindle | Yes, but pages stay fixed | Yes, via Send to Kindle |

Convert the original file instead
If the PDF was made from a Word document and you still have it, convert that instead with our Word to EPUB converter. Word files keep real headings, so chapters and the table of contents come out far cleaner than from a PDF.
Tips for the best result
- If you have the original Word file, convert that instead: it keeps headings and chapters much more reliably.
- Running headers, footers and page numbers sometimes end up inside the text. The “Try to remove” option catches most of them.
- Scanned PDF? Run text recognition first (many PDF apps call it “Recognize text” or OCR), then convert.
- Tables and multi-column layouts may come out as plain paragraphs, so check those pages after converting.
Best ways to read your EPUB
EPUB shines on a dedicated e-reader: no glare, weeks of battery, and text sized the way you like it.
Kobo e-readers
Kobo devices open EPUB files directly. Copy the file over USB and start reading, with no email or extra conversion.

PDF to EPUB FAQ
Will the EPUB look exactly like my PDF?
No. EPUB reflows text to fit the screen, so page layout, columns and exact positions are not kept. Text, paragraphs and headings carry over. Images and text styling such as bold and italics are not included.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to EPUB?
Only after running text recognition (OCR) on it. Without OCR, scanned pages are just images and will appear as pictures in the EPUB rather than readable text.
Can I read the converted EPUB on a Kindle?
Yes. Send it with Amazon’s Send to Kindle, which accepts EPUB files. Our guide on reading EPUB on Kindle shows every method.
Is the PDF to EPUB converter free?
Yes. It is free for files up to 50 MB, with no signup and no watermark.
What happens to my files?
Nothing leaves your device. The conversion runs inside your web browser, so your PDF is never uploaded to a server.
