How to open EPUB files on Windows
Windows has no built-in EPUB reader anymore. These free options open EPUB files on Windows 10 and 11. Updated October 28, 2026.
Windows does not include an EPUB reader. The old version of Microsoft Edge could open EPUB files, but that feature did not carry over to the current Edge. The good news: several free apps open EPUB files well, and you can always convert a book to PDF.
Option 1: Thorium Reader (free)
Thorium Reader is a free, open-source reading app built specifically for EPUB. It has a clean interface, lets you change fonts and themes, and includes read-aloud and accessibility features.
- Install Thorium Reader from its website or the Microsoft Store.
- Open the app and drag your EPUB into the window, or use Import a book.
- Click the book to start reading.
Option 2: Calibre’s ebook viewer (free)
Calibre is a free library manager that includes a capable ebook viewer. It is the best choice if you have many books or also need to convert between formats.
- Install Calibre and click Add books to import the EPUB.
- Double-click the book to open it in the viewer.
Option 3: SumatraPDF (free, lightweight)
SumatraPDF is a small, fast reader that opens PDF, EPUB and MOBI files. It has fewer reading options, but it starts instantly and uses very little memory.
Option 4: Google Play Books (in the browser)
Sign in to Google Play Books in your browser and upload the EPUB. The book is then available in Play Books on your phone and tablet too.
Option 5: Convert the EPUB to PDF
If you only need to read, print or share one book, you don’t have to install anything. Convert the EPUB to PDF and it opens in Edge, Chrome or any PDF reader.
