Why convert Word to EPUB?
Word documents are made for printing on fixed pages. An EPUB lets readers change font size and read comfortably on phones and e-readers, which is how most ebooks are read.
Self-publishing authors, writers sharing drafts with beta readers, teachers sending course material and businesses publishing guides all use this conversion. Amazon KDP accepts both DOCX and EPUB uploads, while stores such as Apple Books and Kobo work with EPUB.
The single most important thing is your headings. If every chapter title uses Word’s Heading 1 style, the converter turns each one into a chapter and an entry in the table of contents. Titles that are just bold, large text will not be detected.

Good to know
Using Google Docs
- Upload the .docx to Google Drive and open it with Google Docs.
- Click File → Download → EPUB Publication (.epub).
Quick, but you get fewer options for chapters and the table of contents.
Tips for the best result
- Use Word’s Heading 1 style for every chapter title, not just bold, large text.
- Use page breaks between chapters instead of pressing Enter many times.
- Avoid text boxes, columns and layout made with tabs or spaces; they do not survive the move to a reflowable ebook.
- Insert images inline with the text (“In line with text”) so they stay in the right place.
- Have an older .doc file? Open it in Word and save it as .docx first.

Word to EPUB FAQ
How does the converter find my chapters?
From your Word heading styles. By default each Heading 1 starts a new chapter and becomes an entry in the table of contents. You can switch to Heading 2 or page breaks instead.
Can I upload the EPUB to Amazon KDP?
Yes. KDP accepts EPUB files. It also accepts DOCX directly, so use whichever previews better in KDP’s previewer.
Will my fonts be kept?
Bold, italics and headings are kept. Most reading apps let readers choose their own font, so exact typefaces are often replaced on the reader’s device.
Can I convert an old .doc file?
Open it in Word or LibreOffice and save it as .docx first, then choose it here.
Is the Word to EPUB converter free?
Yes. Free for files up to 50 MB, with no signup.
